How to Choose Pendant Lights for a Living Room

A pendant light is often the first thing people notice in a living room, so it is worth getting the size, height and light right. This guide covers how to choose a pendant for a lounge or open-plan living area in a South African home: the size of the shade, how high to hang it, the colour of the light, and whether to buy a fitting with a built-in LED or one that takes a separate globe.

1. Decide what the pendant has to do

In a living room a pendant usually does one of three jobs:

  • Main light for the room. One central fitting that lights the whole space. Choose a larger shade or an integrated LED pendant with a high lumen figure.
  • Feature over a table or seating area. A statement shade over a coffee table, dining table or reading corner, with other lights doing the general work.
  • A group or cluster. Two or three pendants in a row, or several at different heights in a double-volume space or stairwell.

Most comfortable living rooms combine a pendant with lamps at eye level. If the pendant is the only light, the room can feel flat at night.

2. Get the size right

A common rule of thumb for a single pendant over a table is a shade roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table. For a pendant that lights the middle of a room, larger is usually better than smaller: a small shade in a big lounge looks lost.

Several of our pendants come in more than one size, which makes this easier:

  • The Honey Badger Pino pine cone pendant is locally made in five sizes: 200mm and 300mm suit a row or cluster, 400mm and 600mm work as a single pendant over a dining table, and 1000mm is scaled for a double-volume entrance or stairwell.
  • The Honey Badger Tondo sphere comes in 400mm, 600mm and 900mm, and is designed to be hung in clusters at different heights.
  • For a large open-plan room, the K-Light Orbit LED ring is 80cm across, sized for a big dining table or the centre of an open-plan space.

3. Hanging height

Two common guides that designers use:

  • Over a table: around 75–85cm from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade, so people can see each other across the table and the light falls on the table, not in their eyes.
  • Where people walk underneath: high enough to pass under comfortably. Around 2.1m from the floor to the bottom of the shade is a widely used minimum.

Check the drop of the fitting before you order. For example, the SPAZIO Seattle marble pendant has a suspension cord adjustable up to 3m, and the K-Light Medium Balloon has an adjustable drop with an overall height of 158cm. The K-Light Orbit has a total hanging height of 230cm.

4. Built-in LED or a separate globe?

Integrated LED pendants have the light source built in, so there is no globe to buy and the light output is fixed by the maker. Compare them on lumens:

Pendant Light Colour
K-Light Orbit LED ring, 80cm 60W, 3500 lumens 3000K warm white
Eurolux Brillia figure-eight, Ø580mm 40W, 2500 lumens Integrated LED, not dimmable
Synerji LED pendant, black 17W, 1100 lumens 4000K cool white
K-Light Medium Balloon, smoke glass 5.4W integrated LED 3000K warm white

Pendants with an E27 (ES) lamp holder take a separate globe, which lets you choose the brightness and colour and swap to a decorative filament globe later. Fittings marked "Excl. Lamp" are sold without the globe. Examples include the SPAZIO Seattle (E27, up to 60W) and the Synerji 3-light pendant set, which takes three ES globes. Pair them with a warm white LED globe or a decorative filament globe.

5. Choose warm white for living spaces

Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) is the usual choice for lounges and dining areas because it feels relaxed in the evening and flatters wood, fabric and natural materials. Cool white (4000K) is crisper and suits kitchens, studies and work areas. If you want to change the mood, choose a pendant that takes a dimmable globe and have a dimmer that is rated for LED fitted by your electrician. Note that some integrated LED pendants are not dimmable: the Eurolux Brillia, for example, should be connected to a standard switch.

6. Pick a material that suits the room

  • Natural: compressed pine from Honey Badger, made locally, or the woven rattan NB Rotterdam for a relaxed, Scandinavian or coastal look.
  • Glass: smoke, amber or clear glass shades such as the K-Light Balloon range soften the light and look good in a row.
  • Stone and wood: the SPAZIO Seattle hangs a travertine marble cylinder under a walnut or oak cap.
  • Metal: black, bronze and nickel metal pendants for modern and industrial interiors.
  • Statement LED: ring and sculptural LED pendants for open-plan rooms with high ceilings.

Frequently asked questions

What size pendant light should I use in a living room?
Over a table, aim for a shade about half to two-thirds the table's width. As the main light in a larger lounge, choose a bigger shade or a cluster rather than one small pendant.

How high should a pendant hang above a coffee or dining table?
About 75–85cm from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade is a common guide. Where people walk underneath, keep at least about 2.1m clear above the floor.

Warm white or cool white for a lounge?
Warm white (2700K–3000K) suits most living rooms. Cool white (4000K) is better for kitchens and work areas.

Do pendant lights come with a globe?
Integrated LED pendants have the light built in. Fittings with an E27 holder usually do not include a globe; the product title says "Excl. Lamp" where this applies.
