Solar Floodlights: What to Look For and Where to Buy
Share
A solar floodlight lights a driveway, yard, gate or outbuilding without a mains cable, which makes it a practical choice for spots far from the house or where trenching would be expensive. This guide explains how to compare solar floodlights, why the watt rating can be misleading, and where to buy them online in South Africa with delivery to your door.
1. Compare lumens, not the watt rating
Solar floodlights are often sold by a watt figure, but the number that tells you how bright the light is, is lumens. Our Synerji solar LED floodlight with separate panel lists both:
| Size | Light output | Price excl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 50W | 850 lumens | R990.00 |
| 100W | 1,100 lumens | R1,368.00 |
| 150W | 1,500 lumens | R1,788.00 |
All three give 6000K daylight and run on a 6V system from their own solar panel. Choose the larger sizes for open yards and long driveways. Prices are as at October 2026 and exclude VAT, which is added at checkout.
2. A separate panel is a big advantage
The best place for a floodlight is often under an eave or on a shaded wall, which is exactly where a built-in solar panel would not charge. With a separate panel on a cable, as on the Synerji solar floodlight, you mount the light where you need it and the panel where it gets full sun.
3. Other solar options for big areas
- Driveways, private roads and estate entrances: the Synerji 20W solar LED street light, with an opal lens for softer light or a clear lens for crisper light. A mounting pole is needed and is not included.
- Light only when someone is there: the Synerji twin solar motion sensor light gives up to 1000 lumens with a 10m detection range, and the 8W rectangular solar sensor wall light gives 1000 lumens over a 300mm-long head.
- Gate and driveway posts: the SPAZIO Sunflower 20W solar post top, IP65, in warm or cool white.
4. Getting the most from a solar floodlight
- Point the panel at open sky where it gets direct sun for most of the day, clear of trees, roof overhangs and walls.
- Expect shorter run times in winter and after cloudy days.
- Clean the panel every few months; dust reduces how much it charges.
- Aim the light down onto your property, not into the road or a neighbour's windows.
5. When a mains floodlight is the better buy
If there is power nearby, or you need strong light every night regardless of the weather, a mains LED floodlight gives more light for the money. Our Synerji DOB LED floodlights run from 10W to 300W, and there are motion sensor models for security. Mains floodlights must be installed by a qualified electrician.

Frequently asked questions
How bright is a 100W solar floodlight?
It depends on the light. Our Synerji 100W solar floodlight gives 1,100 lumens; always compare lumens rather than the watt rating.
Do solar floodlights need wiring?
No mains wiring is needed. The floodlight connects to its own solar panel.
Will a solar floodlight work in the shade?
The light can be in shade if the panel is not. Choose a model with a separate panel and mount the panel in full sun.
What colour light do solar floodlights give?
The Synerji solar floodlight gives 6000K daylight, which is crisp and clear for driveways and security.
